Honey, Maureen. “ Survival and Song: Women Poets of the Harlem Renaissance.”
Women’s Studies. 16 (1989): 293-315.
Honey defends women poets of the Renaissance against critics. She analyses several works to defend her
claim that women of this period made great contributions to the female poet tradition. Her
Notes can be used to locate more resources on the topic.

A very good and brief introduction to Anne Spencer that includes an excellent Works Consulted
listing additional resources on Spencer and the Harlem Renaissance.
Hull, Gloria T. Color, Sex & Poetry : Three Women Writers of the Harlem
Renaissance. Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1987.
Hull’s work contains biographical information and literary analysis for three poets: Alice Dunbar-Nelson, Angelina Weld Grimke, and Georgia
Douglas Camp Johnson. The "Introduction" is a worthwhile read for it focuses
on the African-American woman’s experience during the Renaissance.
Johnson, Helen. This Waiting for Love : Helene Johnson, Poet of the Harlem
Renaissance. Verner D. Mitchell, ed. Amherst: University of Massachusetts Press, 2000.
Collection of Johnson’s 37 poems, 10 of which were written after Renaissance. Item also
contains biographical information and literary analysis, a chronology of her life, selected
letters, and an Afterward by Johnson’s daughter, Abigal McGrath.
Roses, Lorraine Elena & Randolph, Ruth Elizabeth. Harlem Renaissance and Beyond:
Literary Biographies of 100 Black Women Writers, 1900-1945. Boston: G.K. Hall, 1990.
For each author listed in this book, there’s a brief literary biography
and a bibliography of some (not all) of their works. Appendix A lists writers by genre.
Appendix B lists women by geographical location. Appendix C lists writers by date, and
Appendix D is an index to titles. Extensive bibliography at end lists sources that may
provide more detailed biographical information.
Shadowed Dreams : Women’s Poetry of the Harlem Renaissance. Maureen Honey, ed.
New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press, c1989.
Source focuses entirely on Renaissance women poets. Poems divided into four groups:
Protest, Heritage, Love and Passion, and Nature. Introduction by Maureen Honey provides
survey of subject matter in relation to Renaissance. Most poets in this collection have a
brief biography in back of text.
Harlem’s Glory : Black Women Writing, 1900-1950. Edited by Lorraine Elena Roses,
Ruth Elizabeth Randolph. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1996.
Although this source is mostly a collection of short stories, it does contain poems of the
Harlem Renaissance not found in Shadowed Dreams.
